These old silver coins from the Netherlands are hard to find. If you have a specimen that is in good shape, with no stains, spots, scratches, cleanings, gouges, nicks, or similar damage, you have a valuable coin. The value of even worn specimens is not too shabby. Lack of damage and good eye appeal are the most important attributes.
The coin in our picture is a nice example from PMO Direct in IJsselstein, The Netherlands. It is in beautiful condition and PMO has it on sale for 180 euros, about $250 US dollars, a good price for such a nice coin. CoinQuest thanks PMO direct for use of their coin image.
The catalogs list these coins as shown below. Remember that catalog values are only approximate and must be adjusted according to the concepts on our Important Terminology page.
10 CENTS, 0.031 troy ounces silver
worn: $15 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $35
well preserved: $75
fully uncirculated: $130
10 cent coins dated before 1825 are very rare, worth $400 in average circulated condition
25 CENTS, 0.077 troy ounces silver
worn: $20 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $40
well preserved: $90
fully uncirculated: $180
25 cent coins with the following dates are worth much more than the values above, about 10 times as much: 1817, 1818, 1828
If you have one of these coins in good condition, it would probably be worthwhile to show it to a knowledgable collector or coin dealer. There are subtle variations and patterns that are worth more than the 'normal' coins shown here. These variations are beyond the scope of our CoinQuest forum. Only an in-person, actual inspection of this coin will reveal reliable value estimates.

Token Great Britain Professor Holloway 1856 to 1858

Thomas 'Professor' Holloway was a colorful advertising genius and purveyor of pills and ointments in 19th century Europe. He pioneered many advertising techniques still in use today and grew rich selling patent medicines. This Wikipedia page outlines his life.
Holloway advertising tokens are collectible items. The one in our picture is in superb condition, and it sold at auction from Noble Numismatics in Australia for a whopping $520 Australian dollars, or about $530 US dollars. CoinQuest thanks Noble for use of their image. Most tokens you see are in far worse condition, and they are worth far less.
Here are some typical catalog values for these tokens:
worn: $30 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $100
well preserved: $200
fully uncirculated: $700
Apply the concepts shown on our Terminology page to convert these catalog values to actual buy and sell values.

Monetary reform came to South Korea in 1962 and old hwan pieces like these were replaced with modern won issues.
These coins are not very valuable. If a piece is in better condition, and if a collector really needs it to complete his or her set, one of these coins might sell for two US dollars or a little more.
worn: less than $1 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: less than $1
well preserved: $1
fully uncirculated: $4
The coin bears a Dangun date, with a calendar starting at the legendary founding of Korea in 2333BC. If you can find a 10 hwan coin with a 4292 date (equivalent to 1959), it is more valuable. Most 4292 10 hwans are heavily circulated. An uncircluated example catalogs for $50 if dated 4292. There are many more 4294 (1961) coins in uncirculated condition and they are barely valuable.

Token France Pierre le Marchante Saint Manvieu 1627

This is a copper token (jeton) used for gifts, games, commerce, counting, and the like from the town of Saint Manvieu in northwestern France. 'Pierre le Marchante' (Peter the merchant) is proudly displayed on the side with the helmet and coat of arms. On the other side AETERNITATI (eternity) encircles two mountains topped with flaming hearts.
The jeton in our picture is in very good condition, with all inscriptions and devices very clear. The eye appeal is good. It sold for 40 euros (about 50 US dollars) during a 2011 auction by Jean Elsen et ses Fils in Brussels. It might sell for more today.
Very approximately, values for this jeton run like this:
worn: $10 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $25
well preserved: $80
These are catalog values and must be adjusted to obtain actual buy and sell values. See our Important Terminology page for a full explanation.
CoinQuest thanks Jean Elsen for use of his coin photo. It's a nice one!

Congratultions, Indrek, you have a valuable coin. As you suspect, this is indeed a silver rouble from the old Russian Empire. Most Russian coins of the era have the Byzantine double-headed eagle on the back, but these coins have a stylized cross with crowns pattern.
PETER I ROUBLES: 'I' in the angles of the cross on the back
PETER II ROUBLES: 'II' in the angles
This page applies to both Peter I and Peter II roubles.
The coin in our main picture (upper left) comes from Dr. Christopher Stadler in Bremen, Germany, where it was on sale for $775 euros, about $950 US dollars. The coin is in such good condition, with superb eye appeal, so it can command this amount of money. CoinQuest thanks Dr. Stadler for use of his coin photo. It is a beautiful specimen.
Peter the Great, Peter I, ruled Russia from 1689 to 1725. Then Catherine took over for two years, followed by Peter II until 1730. Catherine's roubles look different than this one, but Peter II minted almost the same coin as Peter I with the cross-and-crown reverse. The values below apply to roubles from Peter I and Peter II. Coins (A), (B), and (C) in the image to the right are from Peter I. Coins (D) and (E) are from Peter II. There is variability in the patterns.
Here are very approximate catalog values. If you have a coin like this, and if it is in good condition, you should seek a knowledgeable collector or dealer to evaluate your coin and recommend next steps, including authentication, grading, and encapsulation by PCGS, NGC, ICG, or ANACS (look them up on the Internet). Our page here gives very general guidance, not absolute facts.
worn: $250
average circulated: $1200
well preserved: $3000
Peter II coins (dated 1727 to 1729) are worth slightly less than this. There are Peter I roubles dated 1724 and 1725 with a special (SPB, St. Petersburg) mint mark that worth over $5000 in average circulated condition. Ask a professional coin dealer or a knowledgeable collector to find the mint mark if you have a 1724 or 1725 rouble.
As with all valuable coins, you must be aware that counterfeits exist. Some counterfeits, especially from well-funded crooks in China, are very difficult to detect, even by experts. Always deal with reputable dealers when there is lots of money involved.
Beware of fakes. Some fakes look very convincing. One 'counterfeit' is not a counterfeit all. It is a dazzling Retro Rouble pattern piece produced as a novelty. They come in various metals and sell for $20 US dollars or so.

Medal Great Britain Sir T S Raffles Founder of Singapore 1819

Singapore was founded in 1819, and Sir T S Raffles looks mighty proud of his work. But this pewter medal is of modern origins (probably around 1980) and, as such, does not carry very much value.
(I've heard of a silver version of this medal. Since it is so large, it contains a lot of silver and that makes it valuable. Just about all of them, or perhaps all of them, are made of pewter.)
Typical catalog values:
worn: $1 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: $5
well preserved: $10
fully uncirculated: $40
